Microbial contamination of a product can occur during its manufacture. The majority of contaminants are present in many different sources:
Moreover, moderate temperatures, neutral pH and inadequate housekeeping tend to cause and support process and product contamination!
In general oxidising and non-oxidising biocides are used to prevent products from being contaminated by microorganisms. In addition to bleaching, oxidising agents possess some severe disadvantages; many manufacturers therefore use non-oxidising in-can preservatives to treat stored raw materials, wash water and contaminated finished products. This single long-term preservative may get the job done however it can be time consuming and the cost of long-term preservation can be quite high! That is why many manufacturers use fast-acting biocides to treat raw materials and process water in order to avoid contamination within their manufacturing process. In summary this approach is inconvenient, expensive and does not ensure for comprehensive process and product security!
